Preloading is commonly applied as treatment for soft ground exhibiting high compressibility, prior to the actual construction taking place. The approach alone, however, might not be as effective, especially when the soft deposit comes with relatively large thickness or stress history. The situation can then be improved by combining Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) and vacuum preloading, to promote the radial flow deep down the soft deposit and thus accelerate the overall consolidation process; moreover, the combination in turn gives better stability and deformation control, owing to a couple of favorable hydro-mechanical response associated with vacuum preloading, besides the reduced embankment height required.

In this webinar, we will showcase:

  • Simulation of vacuum and equivalent surcharge preloading in PLAXIS
  • Deformation and stability response
