The professional practice of geotechnical engineering requires a tool that provides reliable analysis that can be taken seriously.
This is especially true when lives and properties are at risk, such as landslides in the proximity of buildings. In this situation, both temporary and permanent stabilization works require a high degree of confidence and accuracy, which is usually not provided by Limit Equilibrium analysis, especially when deformations play an important role in the problem.
In the case of a landslide remediation in California, Jody Robinson (DRS-Engineering) adopted PLAXIS as his geotechnical analysis tool due to its efficiency and easiness to use. According to Jody, PLAXIS offers constitutive models (Hardening Soil) and functionalities, like updated mesh option for large displacements and seismicity, that were needed to adequately handle the analysis.
Join our talk with Jody Robinson about how the PLAXIS' agility and rich outputs supported his workflow in tackling this serious project, which would not be possible to be delivered by other calculation methods with the same data input.
You'll gain an overview of:
- A real case of PLAXIS use for landslide remediation in California
- How Finite Element Method provides accurate geotechnical analysis' results that cannot be achieved by Limit Equilibrium or analytical methods
- How PLAXIS software is efficient, reliable, and easy to use

Jody is a project geotechnical engineer with 8 years of experience in slope stabilization, foundation and pavement design, deep excavation shoring projects, and landslide remediation projects. He is an expert in foundation systems, numerical finite element and limit equilibrium modeling, subsurface investigations, and instrumentation. He has performed design and field work for projects with difficult site conditions such as thick profiles of soft, compressible materials; severe liquefaction; and lateral spread hazards. Jody is proficient in the following programs: Slide, Settle3D, PLAXIS2D, PLAXIS3D, RS Pile, Lpile, APile, SHAFT, CLiq, and CPeT-IT, with knowledge of AutoCAD and RGui. Using a hands-on, detail-oriented approach to projects, Jody maintains high ethical and quality standards, professional demeanor, and cooperative attitude.
