Understanding and preventing the tailings threat that can strike in seconds

Soil liquefaction has been the villain behind some major disasters. As recently as 2019, it was indicted in the catastrophic failure of the Brumadinho tailings dam in Brazil. It remains a threat for tailings generally, and is not always prompted by events such as earthquakes. Static liquefaction, where soil rapidly swaps from stable drained state to undrained flow state, can be triggered by more modest circumstances. Sometimes in just a few seconds…

However, understanding what gives rise to static liquefaction is a complex task involving many elements. Fortunately, the NorSand model, which can capture and compute all those aspects, is now available in PLAXIS.

In this webinar, we use 1974’s liquefaction slump at the Tar Island Dyke in Canada, as a case study to explore how design, soil types, changing demands, a leap in size of the tailings facility, and more all contributed to the collapse. We also take a look at how the NorSand model operates within PLAXIS.
