PLAXIS DESIGNER allows faster building of 3D models. The software allows a number of geometries building paradigms in order to facilitate expedited model creation. Current customers have indicated that for many geotechnical sites there is limited 3D geometry data. However, data is often available in 2D profiles where the geometry is known. There may be multiple profiles of the design of the geotechnical structure.
Developers have been working with users and have enabled a new Profile Blending method of building 3D geometry based on a mix of geology, topography, and multiple 2D profiles of a design. This webinar will describe the new method of geometry creation and educate users on how to utilized it for existing sites. An example site will then be analyzed for 2D and 3D stability.
In this webinar, we will showcase:
- 3D Model creation method
- Model building using profile blending
- 2D and 3D stability analysis

Murray Fredlund
Senior Strategic Advisor
Virtuosity, a Bentley Company
Dr. Fredlund received his training from the University of Saskatchewan and Texas A&M University and has published over 50 research papers on topics related to database design, finite element modeling, and unsaturated soil knowledge-based systems. In 1997 he started SoilVision Systems Ltd. with a database software product called SoilVision which could be used to estimate unsaturated soil behavior. He has since directed the development of eight finite element software packages covering areas of groundwater flow, contaminant transport, geothermal analysis, air-flow analysis, stress / deformation, and slope stability.
More recent work has involved supervising the development of the 2D/3D SVSLOPE slope stability software and the SVDESIGNER conceptual modeling software. This work has continued with the expansion of 3D slope stability analysis into the areas of mining such as the analysis of open pits, tailings dams, power dams and performing landslide risk analysis.
Marina Trevizolli
Manager, User Success
Virtuosity, a Bentley Company
Marina Trevizolli, Civil Engineer and MSc in Geotechnical Engineering is a User Success Manager for Geotechnical Solutions at Virtuosity, A Bentley Company. In the past few years, she had been involved in geotechnical projects related to slope stability and 2D/3D numerical modeling, for highway slopes and hydroelectric power plants hazard assessment, monitoring and in situ investigation planning. Marina is also involved in presenting online events, teaching and workshops about the application of SoilVision and PLAXIS software.
Kyle Hao Shen
Product Sales Engineer
Virtuosity, a Bentley Company
Kyle Shen joined Bentley Systems in 2018 after working as a geotechnical engineer where he worked on several infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia region. Kyle’s role at Bentley is focused on working with engineering consultants from various sectors in Australia and New Zealand in showing the benefits of adopting Bentley’s geotechnical solutions, gINT, PLAXIS and OpenGround.
Kyle obtained his master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of New South Wales. Kyle works out of Bentley’s office in Sydney, Australia.
