Our guest speaker, Ph. D Fermín Sanchez Reyes from México Subterráneo A.C., will share his experience and insights into the construction of a highway from Tepic City to Puerto Vallarta City on the Western Coast of Mexico. In this case study, he encountered a significant mass of rock sliding close to a tunnel portal due to an open cut, which was caused by the re-activation of a geological fault.

Dr. Sanchez and his team used PLAXIS to create a 3D geotechnical model to accurately represent the movement of the rock mass and calculate the new excavations, structures, and compacted fills of the project. The team also used a set of 2D PLAXIS cross-sections to complement the information of the 3D model with a higher degree of refinement.

Fermín Sánchez Reyes is a civil engineer graduated 1994 at the National University of Mexico, postgraduated in geomechanics at the Technical University of Catalonia in Spain with PhD in phase of degree on advanced civil engineering studies. He worked as researcher in Catalonia from 2000 to 2005; he has participated as a designer and construction manager in up to 170 tunnels in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Chili and Guatemala and worked as advisor for multiple government infrastructure departments, as well as for the private industry; he has published several international papers on constitutive modelling of geotechnical materials, and on the design of underground facilities; he has been professor of courses in Mexico, Spain, Peru, Argentina an Colombia as well as lecturer in many international congresses. 

He is the technical manager of the firms Consultec Ingenieros Asociados and GEOSA and professor of applied mathematics, numerical modelling and support systems design at the Tunnelling Master´s Program of the National University of Mexico; he also belongs to the group of lecturers of the Foundation for Continuous Education and Training on Tunnelling and Underground Space Use (ITACET Foundation) as well as to the international group of designers from Bekaert Maccaferri Underground Solutions. He is a registered expert in tunnels by the College of Civil Engineers of Mexico and has worked as an international proficient with the National Infrastructure Agency of Colombia. Fermín Sánchez was president of the Mexican Association for Tunnelling and Underground Works (AMITOS) in the period 2018-2020 and meanwhile was a member of the Executive Council of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA-AITES). Currently he is the Executive Director of the Mexico Underground Association.
